"Travels
with Harmony"

with Harmony
Let me tell you about traveling with my sweet Harmony.
About the same time that I was going to Broadway to do “The
Drowsy Chaperone,” Earl Holliman, our then President,
made his decision to retire from office. Because of the wonderful
staff and Board of Directors, I was able to go to Broadway
and do the show. Along with me came my 5 lb. Yorkie rescue,
Harmony. Notice the picture of me in costume and Harmony
with no clothes on, just her collar.
She is the perfect traveling companion. She sleeps on the
plane, does not beg for food, or to go to the bathroom. Of
course, before we left home, we made a special reservation
for her on the plane. (Each airline has different prices
and rules as to how many pets can be in cabin.) They always
require a recent health certificate from the vet. She travels
at my feet, under the seat in front of me in a Sherpi bag,
which is airline approved.
When we got to New York, it was cold and snowing. The first
thing we did, before getting the luggage, was to pee. I put
Harmony in her harness halter (I don’t want to pull
on her little neck, and the harness lets me pull her up and
out of any danger), and we went out into the cold to pee.
I try to find a covered spot so she is out of the elements,
where there is some real ground and old grass to smell. She
marks the New York airline terminal and we head for the apartment,
not too far from the theatre.
The dog in the next apartment is named Gunther...

"Travels
With Harmony" Part 2
One of the best restaurants in New York City, whether you
are doing theatre or not, is Sardi’s. This is the actors’ hangout
that has caricatures of the actors who are currently, or have
appeared, on Broadway. Harmony is proud that her human companion
is represented on these walls.
One night after “Drowsy Chaperone” we met my sister,
Henry Gibson and Joe Scorie at Sardi’s to have a bite. Since
Harmony was in the dressing room which I was doing the show she,
of course, came with us to Sardi’s. She is a very well
behaved young lady. She stays in her bag, does not beg for food
and no
one knows she is snug in her bag sleeping right at my feet.
From the back of the restaurant I see the maitre’d with a
small yorkie that looked exactly like Harmony. I said to the table, “What
kind of person would bring a dog into a restaurant and not make
sure it was in a bag.” (I could feel Harmony in her bag
between my feet.)
The maitre’d comes over to our table and whispered in my
ear, “Do you have a dog in your bag?” “Of course
not,” I lied.
When it came time to leave, I felt down in the bag... No Harmony.
I screamed and my sister started looking under the table for
her. Henry and Joe pretended to be with other people.
Well, Harmony was safe and getting a lot of attention in the coat
check room. They were trying to see who was going to have the pleasure
of taking Harmony home with
them.
Now whenever I go into Sardi’s they always ask to see Harmony.
I have learned my lesson. Don’t assume anything.
More to come... |
